Narrowneck Oceanway Begins
The 36 kilometre stretch of Oceanway along the Gold Coast has moved one step closer to completion, with construction on a new section at Surfers Paradise now underway.
Engineering Services Committee Chair Cr Dawn Crichlow said the new section of Oceanway at Narrowneck was part of Council’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions by delivering more ‘green-mode’ transport alternatives.
“The Oceanway will increase the access and amenity of the foreshore, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to explore our city’s renowned beaches,” said Cr Crichlow.
“This is yet another stage of the city’s Foreshoreway Program, which is designed to ensure we continue to cater for increasing numbers of residents and visitors into the future.”
Divisional Councillor Susie Douglas said the works were expected to be completed in October 2009.
“The staged works will tie in with preparations for the SuperGP later in the year,” said Cr Douglas.
“”This new stretch will become part of the Oceanway network, which has already proved extremely popular at other locations along the city’s beachfront.
“Works will not impact car parking and all existing parking bays will be retained.”
